LIVE: From Compliance to Ethics: IDEA in School-Based OT and PT Practice

DESCRIPTION:

As related service providers, OT and PT practitioners share responsibility for providing services that are consistent with the requirements and intent of IDEA. Understanding these requirements—and ensuring that our professional reasoning and practices align with them—is an important component of ethical school-based practice. Using IDEA’s six core principles and relevant case law, this course will examine how IDEA applies specifically to the roles and responsibilities of school-based OT and PT practitioners. Participants will consider implications for evaluation, IEP development, service delivery, least restrictive environment, student and family participation, and procedural safeguards. Throughout the webinar, participants will have opportunities to reflect on how well their current practices align with IDEA, identify areas for growth, and establish next steps for strengthening legally sound and ethical school-based practice.

Target Audience: School-Based Occupational Therapy and Physical Therapy Practitioners

Course Instructor: Jan Hollenbeck, OTD, OTR, FAOTA

This MAOT-approved two-hour webinar is designed to meet the Massachusetts* OT/OTA and PT/PTA licensure renewal requirement for two hours of ethics and jurisprudence continuing education, with a focus on issues directly relevant to school-based practice.
